After Losing Showrunners, Now American Gods Star May Not Return
Just days after it was announced showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green were departing American Gods over budgetary issues, the Starz series is facing another potential hurdle. One member of the show’s cast doesn’t know if she’ll be returning for Season 2, thanks to the change in bosses.
Kristin Chenoweth, the actress who plays Germanic goddess of the dawn Easter on the series, spoke to Variety about her status for the show possibly changing. She says it’s Fuller who asked her to join the series, given their shared history on the show Pushing Daisies. “When Bryan was the showrunner, I was coming back for several episodes, but I don’t know now,” she says. “It depends on who it is and if they think I add value or not.”
It’s been reported that over half of Season 2’s scripts were written prior to Fuller and Green leaving the series. However, it’s unknown whether a new showrunner would keep the work that’s been done or start work on the season from scratch to implement their own vision for the series.
In the meantime, Chenoweth says her fellow actors are meeting to figure out their next steps as part of the series while they wait for word on a new boss. “The cast, we all talk to each other and they’re getting together tonight, so we’ll see what happens next.” she says.
Prior to Green and Fuller’s departures, American Gods was expected to return at some point on 2018. Until a replacement is found, there’s no telling when production on a new season will begin.
